Thursday’s Thoughts From a Bartender — First Date Sex

There are a million ways and styles to date. For instance, you can date seriously, casually, casually serious, serially, seriously serially, and so on and so on. And on top of this, we have your picky dater, your once-in-a-blue moon dater, your every other night dater, your ditch him after 2 weeks dater, your I’m in it for the long haul dater, you name it- it’s out there. So, with all this serious and semi-serious dating going on, it follows that sooner or later, someone is going to sleep with someone. Which brings to mind the question, just when exactly is this sooner or later? And more importantly, is the first date too soon?

Well, of course, it varies from person to person and couple to couple. To start with, it all depends on what you’re looking to get out of a date. If you’re looking for a purely physical-meet out on the dance floor- grind- hey you’re cute why don’t you come back to my place-ok but I have work early so I can’t sleep over-kind of date, then sure, go all the way on the first date. If one-night stands are your style, and you’re comfortable with that and can embrace that lifestyle, then go for it. But then again, even if you’re scoring left and right, eventually the routine may get old and I’d advise against it.

Of course, there are other types of scenarios where a first date lay may be acceptable. For example, maybe the case is that you’ve been in a rut for a couple of months and just plain old feel like and/or need to get laid. Or maybe you’ve just gotten out of a serious long term relationship, have finished mourning and listening to Total Eclipse of the Heart on repeat for 2 weeks and are feeling more along the lines of ACDC’s You Shook Me- and if this is the case, then go for it.

Overall though, I’d say first date sex is a bad idea. For either party, male or female, it can totally, and quite often does destroy the entire getting to know-witty flirtatious text banter-are you free this Friday and Saturday?-God I love talking with you- You’re really funny-Are you free every night for the next month?-I’m so lucky I met you- hey I think I really have feelings for you kind of relationship that usually comes after a large number of dates.

At least, that’s my take on the matter. So next time you’re out dating, whoever you are, whatever type of dater you are, just think a little bit before you go all out with someone. But then again, You Shook Me is one pretty damn good song.
